The Fear of the Lord: What It Really Means
Dec 16, 2025
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” — Proverbs 9:10 KJV
The Fear of the Lord
Fear is a heavy word. It rarely comes alone. It brings with it the thought of danger, of flight, of night, of something that tightens the heart and disturbs peace.
Our age teaches us to push fear away, to master it, to cast it out as weakness. But Scripture speaks of another fear. A fear that does not destroy man, but places him rightly before God. A fear that does not bind, but opens the path of wisdom.
The fear of the Lord is not confused dread. It is the reverence of a heart standing before the living God. It is the holy trembling of one who begins to see the greatness of God, His holiness, His justice, His majesty.
And this is where wisdom begins.
Between Fear and Holy Fear
The world knows fear. It fears the unknown, loss, the gaze of others, the future slipping from human hands. This fear wearies the soul. It folds the heart inward. It makes the world feel narrow.
But the fear of the Lord belongs to another kingdom. It does not drive us to flee from God. It teaches us to bow before Him. It does not paralyze the walk. It gives each step weight, direction, and truth.
“Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.”
Psalm 33:8 — KJV
To fear the Lord is to recognize that He is not one name among many. He is the Almighty, the Eternal, the Sovereign King. He sees what is hidden. He weighs what men applaud. He judges with righteousness what the world excuses.
We do not approach God as a light idea. We do not place Him at the edge of life, as a detail added to our ambitions. He is holy. He is Lord.
“Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.”
Revelation 15:4 — KJV
And yet, this fear does not chase the believer away from God. It draws him near in humility. The closer we come to Him, the more we see His mercy. His grace. His love revealed in Jesus Christ, even to the wood of the cross.
Holy fear lowers pride.
It cleanses the sight.
It teaches the heart to walk uprightly.
The Beginning of Wisdom
The fear of the Lord is not the end of wisdom. It is the first stone.
Without it, man builds his own wisdom. He stacks his opinions, his strength, his certainties. But all of it remains fragile. The human heart cannot bear the weight of truth if it refuses to bow before the One who gave it.
When a heart recognizes the authority of God, His Word, His holiness, it finally enters true understanding. Not a cold intelligence, but a living wisdom. A wisdom that reaches down into choices, words, desires, and renunciations.
“The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.”
Proverbs 15:33 — KJV
This wisdom restrains us when sin looks easy. It slows us when anger wants to speak. It lifts us when pride seeks its place. It reminds us that we live before the face of God, not only in great moments, but in hidden gestures.
“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.”
Proverbs 16:6 — KJV
The fear of the Lord is therefore not an abstract idea. It produces a walk. It turns a man away from evil. It teaches him to choose what pleases God when no one is watching.
Living Coram Deo in Holy Fear
To live Coram Deo, before the face of God, is to live under this light. It is to know that nothing is lost in the shadows. Nothing escapes His gaze. Nothing is too ordinary to be lived before Him.
It is to honor Him in hidden places.
It is to obey without an audience.
It is to love what He loves and refuse what He calls evil.
“The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.”
Psalm 25:14 — KJV
But this fear is not cold. It is inhabited by trust. The one who fears the Lord also learns to rest in Him. He finds safety in His hand, joy in His presence, peace in His faithfulness.
For the fear of the Lord does not crush the soul.
It leads it to life.
“The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.”
Proverbs 19:23 — KJV
The Beginning Is Here
Do you fear the Lord?
Not with a fear that flees His presence.
But with a reverence that bows before His holiness.
Not with a fear that hides.
But with a heart that stands in awe.
Not with servile terror.
But with a faith that knows the greatness of God and submits to His voice.
The beginning of wisdom is here.
Before His face.
In reverence.
In obedience.
In life.
