The Light in the Darkness: Being a Bold Witness in a World That Rejects Truth

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14 KJV

The Light of the World

Darkness does not welcome the light gently. It resists it, draws in against it, and seeks to extinguish it. Yet the light does not retreat. It shines. It reveals what was hidden, shows what is true, and calls those walking in shadow to find the way home.

Jesus said: “Ye are the light of the world.”

This is not a suggestion.
This is not a distant possibility.
It is a reality.

If you belong to Christ, you are light. The question is not only whether that light exists, but whether it shines.

Are we visible, or hidden?

A World That Resists Truth

We live in a time where truth is often treated as an offense. Righteousness is mocked, faithfulness appears strange, and standing firm for Christ can come at a cost. The world presses us to keep faith private, to soften the edges of the Gospel, to blend into the background.

But this is not how Christ spoke to His people.

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” — John 3:19 KJV

The rejection of truth is not new. The prophets were persecuted. The apostles were imprisoned. Christ Himself was crucified. From the beginning, the world has resisted the light when it exposes what it wants to keep in shadow.

But that resistance does not change our calling.

Unashamed of the Gospel

Paul writes:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” — Romans 1:16 KJV

To be unashamed is not to speak harshly. It is not to confuse courage with pride. Truth is not given as a weapon to wound, but as a light to guide. It is carried with love, conviction, and courage.

To be unashamed is to speak when silence becomes compromise.
It is to stand firm when culture demands surrender.
It is to bear witness to Christ, even when it costs something.

Be unashamed in your work. Let integrity, honesty, and faithfulness speak even before your words do.

Be unashamed in your conversations. When the opportunity comes, name Christ. Share the Gospel with clarity and grace.

Be unashamed in what you wear, what you display, and what you carry into the world. Let Scripture be visible, not only on objects, but in the life, on the lips, and in the walk.

The darker the world becomes, the harder even a small light is to ignore.

A City on a Hill

Jesus says that a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. A candle lit in a dark room naturally draws the eye. If we are in Christ, we are not called to disappear into the shadows.

Jesus continues:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 KJV

The believer’s light does not exist to draw glory to himself. It shines so that the Father may be glorified. Visible works are not a stage for man, but a testimony rendered to God.

The world will not always welcome this light. But there are still souls in darkness who need to see it.

You were not saved to remain silent.
You were not redeemed to stay hidden.
You were called to shine.

Shining Before His Face

To live Coram Deo, before the face of God, is to remember that light does not begin before men. It begins before Him. In hidden places. In ordinary choices. In faithfulness no one notices.

Then that light appears outwardly. Not as performance, but as the fruit of a life inhabited by Christ.

Shine with courage.
Speak with truth.
Stand firm with love.

The world may resist the light.
But the light belongs to God.
